General Airport Information

Lisbon Airport is the main gateway to the Portuguese capital. Officially named Humberto Delgado Airport and commonly referred to as Portela Airport, it is located just 7 km / 4.3 miles from Lisbon city center, making it only a 20-minute drive from downtown.

LIS Airport is a relatively old aviation hub consisting of two terminal buildings. Despite its age and limited space, it serves more than 57 airlines and connects Lisbon with destinations all over the world. In 2023 alone, over 33.6 million passengers passed through the airport.

However, Lisbon Airport has reached its operational limits. As a result, the Portuguese government has approved both an expansion of the existing airport and the construction of a new one. The future Lisbon Luís de Camões Airport is expected to gradually replace LIS Airport and become fully operational by 2034.

Terminals

Lisbon Airport consists of two terminals. Terminal 1 (T1) handles the vast majority of flights and hosts all full-service and traditional airlines. It is also where passengers will find most of the airport’s shopping areas, restaurants, lounges, and passenger services.

Terminal 2 (T2) is a smaller facility dedicated exclusively to the departures of low-cost carriers. It offers limited amenities, and passengers departing from T2 are advised to arrive well prepared. All arrivals, regardless of the departure terminal, are handled at T1.

Hotels

Travelers flying through Lisbon Airport have a wide range of accommodation options. Numerous hotels are located near Portela Airport, ideal for early departures, late arrivals, or short stays.

Alternatively, Lisbon city center offers an even broader selection of hotels, from luxury properties to budget-friendly guesthouses. Thanks to the airport’s proximity and excellent transport connections, staying downtown is often just as convenient.

Parking

Lisbon Airport is well equipped to meet passengers’ parking needs. Whether you are looking for short-term parking or a long-stay option, LIS Airport provides several parking facilities.

A total of four car parks are available, located both directly next to the terminal and slightly further away but still within walking distance. Depending on your budget and length of stay, you can easily find the most suitable parking solution at Portela Airport.

Layover at the Airport

Layovers at Lisbon Airport don’t have to be boring or time-consuming. The airport offers all essential services and amenities to keep passengers comfortable, even during longer stopovers.

Moreover, with Lisbon city center just 20 minutes away, passengers with a 4–5-hour layover can easily leave the airport and enjoy a short visit to the city before continuing their journey.
