Lisbon Airport (LIS) to Alfama: complete transport guide
Alfama is Lisbon's oldest neighbourhood — the labyrinthine old Moorish quarter that climbs from the Tagus up to the Castle of São Jorge. It is one of the few areas the 1755 earthquake left largely intact. From Humberto Delgado Airport it is only 7 km, but the steep narrow streets mean public transport drops you at the edge; the last stretch is on foot or by tram.

Metro Red → Blue Line to Santa Apolónia / Baixa-Chiado?
Take the Red Line from Aeroporto to São Sebastião, change to the Blue Line, and alight at Santa Apolónia (north edge of Alfama, by the river) or Baixa-Chiado (uphill walk into Alfama). Cheapest scheduled option.
- Operator: Metropolitano de Lisboa
- Duration: 35 min
- Price: €1.65
- Frequency: Every 5–8 min
- Where to board: Metro Aeroporto
- Notes: Tap-in with Lisboa Viva or contactless card. From Santa Apolónia, follow signs toward Castelo de São Jorge for the steep walk through Alfama proper.

Carris bus 744 to Marquês de Pombal + Metro/Tram to Alfama?
Carris 744 to Marquês de Pombal, then Metro Blue Line to Santa Apolónia or tram 28 to Portas do Sol.
- Operator: Carris + Metro/Tram
- Duration: 55 min
- Price: €2.30 (single)
- Frequency: Every 15 min
- Where to board: Bus stops level 0 outside arrivals

Metered taxi to Alfama?
Taxi meters apply. Expect €12–15 depending on time of day plus the €1.60 luggage surcharge. The driver can drop you on Rua Augusto Rosa near the Cathedral; deeper into Alfama, streets become pedestrian-only.
- Operator: Lisbon licensed taxi operators
- Duration: 20 min
- Price: €12–15
- Frequency: On demand at official rank
- Where to board: Official rank at arrivals
- Notes: Tell the driver your closest landmark (Sé Catedral, Largo das Portas do Sol or Mirante de Santa Luzia) rather than the exact street — narrow Alfama streets confuse satnav.

Uber / Bolt / FreeNow to Alfama?
Usually 25–30 % cheaper than the taxi for the same destination. Drop-off points are limited inside Alfama by narrow streets; specify Largo das Portas do Sol or Santa Apolónia.
- Operator: Uber, Bolt, FreeNow
- Duration: 20 min
- Price: €8–12
- Frequency: On demand via app
- Where to board: TVDE pick-up area at terminal arrivals
- Notes: Bolt is often the cheapest in Lisbon. Surge prices apply on Fado-night weekend evenings.
When should you pick each option?
- Metro to Santa Apolónia + walk: Cheapest option; ideal with carry-on luggage and an accommodation near the riverfront edge of Alfama.
- Metered taxi: Best for travellers with heavy bags or arriving after midnight when trams stop.
- Uber / Bolt: Cheapest door-to-door in normal hours; choose this for first-time visitors to avoid metering confusion.
What are the practical tips?
- Wear non-slip shoes — Alfama's calçada (mosaic cobblestone) pavement is steep and slippery in light rain.
- Avoid the airport-Alfama journey at evening rush hour (17:30–19:30): the Almirante Reis corridor is jammed and a taxi can take 35–40 minutes instead of 20.
- If you arrive with heavy luggage, ask a taxi or rideshare to drop at Portas do Sol — the highest point on the city side of Alfama — and walk downhill to your accommodation.
- The 28E tram is a 'living museum' but not designed for suitcases; use Metro + walk for the airport leg and ride 28E for sightseeing only.
